Are you listening?

Listening implies that you are giving you attention to a sound. Hearing means that you are capable of hearing sound.

Why is it important to know the difference? One implies that you were paying attention and possibly heard and understood the intent. The other implies that you can hear something.

So when my husband says, “I heard you.” what does that mean. He heard, understood and will evaluate? He heard me making noise? He hear blah- blah – blah.

While you don’t want to treat an adult like a child, listening is a skill. It takes practice. If you don’t do it correctly you use those skills.

In the next couple of weeks we are going to explore what listening really means and how it can effect your relationships.
